Associate’s Degrees.
You can earn an associate’s degree online in about two year, as you would with a traditional two year or community college.

Many online colleges degree programs let you transfer your credit to a four year college or university if you decide to continue your studies.

There are four different types of associate degrees that you can earn online:


  • Associate of Arts (AA). The Associate of Arts degree is a degree in liberal arts studies like English, or Humanities.
  • Associate of Science (AS). The Associate of Science degree is suited for students that want to study subjects like math or science.
  • Associate in Applied Science (AAS) – The Associate of Applied Science degree is a degree for students who do not plan to continue there studies after completing this degree. Four year colleges and universities do not always accept transfer credits from Associate of Applied Science degrees.
  • Associate in Occupational Studies (AOS). An Associate in Occupational Studies degree is a vocational degree that is very similar to the Associate of Applied Science degree. Most Associate in Occupational Studies degrees do not transfer to four year college Bachelor’s degree programs.

    Bachelor’s degree.

  • Bachelor of Arts (BA). The Bachelor of Arts degree is degree for students studying academic subjects. A Bachelor of Arts degree can be obtained by four years of study or by transferring credits from a completed Associated or Arts degree. You can also apply credits from a traditional school to an online Bachelor of Arts degree program.
  • Bachelor of Science (BS). Bachelor of Science degrees are for student that is studying subjects like science and mathematics. Like the Bachelor of Arts degree, the Bachelor of Science degree can encompass credits taken from an Associate of Science degree.
  • Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA). Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees are for students studying visual arts and performing arts.

    Master’s Degrees.
    You can also complete a Master’s degree online. Some traditional colleges have selective Master’s degrees that can be complete online. There are a limited number of independent online colleges that offer Master’s Degree programs. There are different types of Master’s degree programs. Here are the most common Master’s degree programs that you can find online:

  • Master of Arts (MA) – This degree is awarded to students completing studies like humanities, fine arts and social sciences. Just like traditional Master’s degree programs, online colleges Master’s degree programs can be completed in two years time. Most online Master’s degree programs require the student to complete a thesis or comprehensive exam.
  • Master of Science (MS). The Master of Science degree is for students studying subjects like sciences, business, and technology.

    Ph.D.
    Online doctorate degree programs are very complex. The distance education student pursuing a Ph.D. should be able to balance their studies with family and work responsibilities. Online doctorate programs are writing intensive and involve advanced research.
