Distance Learning - A Beacon In The Ocean For Many

Distance learning is a type of education that is offered strictly online. Distance learning programs are very similar to traditional education programs but focus on teaching by using technology, e-learning systems and independent study.

Many traditional colleges and universities offer distance learning programs and courses.

These courses provide the same in-class learning to students that are off-site.

With distance learning programs, instructors communicate with students by using e-learning systems. E-learning systems are special systems designed to store course information, assignments and communication tools like email and instant messaging. With e-learning systems, students can complete assignments online, communicate with instructors and communicate with other students.

Two popular e-learning systems are WebCT and ANGEL Learning system. Distance learning students can order course materials (textbooks, software etc.) from the college bookstore and have them delivered to their home.

In addition, distance learning students can also gain access to course materials an instructor has posted online. Distance learning gives both students and instructors more flexibility than traditional on-site learning. A student or instructor involved in a distance learning course will be able to complete assignments and communicate with each other at times that are more convenient.
Distance learning can encompass a variety of different forms:
  • Correspondence through the mail
  • Internet correspondence using e-learning systems.
  • Telecourses where course content is broadcast by radio, television or video web seminars/lectures.
  • CD-ROM where the student interacts with content stored on a CD-ROM.
  • Mobile learning where the student accesses course content stored on a mobile device or wireless server.
Some controversy has surrounded the process of distance learning. Although distance learning provides convenient study options and encourages independent study, it may lower the level of academic integrity.

Some feel that distance learning cannot control cheating. In a traditional classroom setting, an instructor can monitor students. With distance learning this is not possible.

Most distance learning programs uphold the same polices for academic dishonesty as those of on-site colleges. Students caught plagiarizing or cheating are still reprimanded.
However, this may be harder to control in a distance learning setting. Because academic honesty is harder to control in a distance learning program, some distance learning programs have incorporated this fact into there testing procedures.

Distance learning programs often provide assignments that use essay writing as a form of testing or only offer open-book exams. Distance learning exams are often a very small portion of a students overall grade. However, some distance learning courses will require that students take exams on-site, in a proctored setting.

Distance learning exams taken online usually have set time limits for completing every question. Because distance learning assignments are mostly based on essay and open-book exams, distance learning assignments tend to be harder.

In addition, distance learning assignments are adapted to be longer and more thorough in order to test for knowledge by encouraging students to research subjects independently. The thoroughness of distance learning assignments helps to keep students honest by making them prove they have done their own work.

Distance learning is a more convenient way to earn a degree. Enrolling in a distance learning program or course will give you the ability to complete your assignments on your own time while maintaining a full time job.

Additionally, many traditional colleges and universities offer distance learning courses or on-site courses that are partially online. In the constant emergence of technology, distance learning is becoming more and more popular.
